Is Thums Up an Indian Brand

Thums Up is Indian by origin, but it has been owned by an American company since 1993. Ramesh Chauhan created it in India in 1977, and it is still often called a homegrown or “desi” cola. Since September 1993 it has belonged to The Coca-Cola Company, so it is Indian-born and foreign-owned.

Thums Up Brand Overview

Thums Up is a strongly flavoured cola, created for Indian tastes and warm weather. It stayed Indian-owned while Coca-Cola was absent from the country, and Coca-Cola bought it after returning. It has since grown into India’s best-selling soft drink. Coca-Cola’s CEO James Quincey said in 2022 that it had become a billion-dollar brand in India, and it is described as the only billion-dollar brand in Coca-Cola India’s portfolio. Coca-Cola has also announced launches in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Origin & Ownership

  • Origin: In 1977, after Coca-Cola exited India, brothers Ramesh and Prakash Chauhan, part owners of the Parle group, set out to fill the gap. Ramesh developed the formula from scratch, and Thums Up launched along with Limca and Gold Spot. It was bolder and spicier than Coke.
  • Why Coca-Cola left: Foreign firms had to cut their stakes in Indian operations under FERA, and Coca-Cola, IBM and Kodak chose to exit rather than comply.
  • The 1993 sale: When Coca-Cola re-entered after liberalisation, it went after Parle’s franchise bottlers. Parle was left unable to bottle and sell its drinks, and Chauhan sold the soft drink brands in September 1993.
  • What happened next: Coca-Cola first cut Thums Up’s marketing and production, then realised customers would switch to Pepsi instead of Coke. It revived the brand as a rival to Pepsi, with the “Toofani” style campaigns and Bollywood ambassadors such as Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Thums Up began regaining share from the early 2000s.
  • Today: The Coca-Cola Company owns and manufactures it through its Indian business, Coca-Cola India. Ramesh Chauhan went on to focus on Bisleri.
